Statewide Internet Registration Now Open For the 2008 Georgia State Games

ATLANTA, GA (April 15, 2008) - In the Greater Metro Atlanta area, 10,000 athletes from across the state are expected for this 50+ Multi-Sport Olympic Style Sports Festival. Event Dates are May 17, June 7, 13-15, 22 and July 11-20, 26 & 28!

   More than 10,000 athletes from across the state are expected to compete in the 50-sport event for amateur athletes of all ages and skill levels. Last year athletes from over 400 cities and 139 out of the 159 of Georgia's Counties participated!

   ANY Georgian can compete in the Georgia Games. Our youngest has been 2 and our oldest has been 97 years old. Top Olympians down to coach potatoes compete every year!    Youth athletes and teams from Georgia's middle and high schools from across the state will automatically be enrolled in the Georgia Games Scholastic Sports Olympiad in an effort to crown the schools with the most physical fitness and sports oriented and students and spirited student bodies towards sports participation. School Champions will be crowned in 1A through 5A classifications and a middle school division. Winning schools will be eligible for physical fitness grants from a total pool of up to $18,000 if enough schools enter each division. Go to www.georgiagames.org for details.

   "We look forward to welcoming thousands of the dedicated and spirited amateur athletes in the state for the Georgia State Games," said Georgia Games Chairman Abit Massey. "We know the athletes and their families will enjoy the competitions" as well as the chance to visit many of Atlanta's attractions and amenities. This festival also keeps the costs down for athletes by eliminating the need to fly to other expensive out of state competitions.

   The Georgia State Games is the premier multi-sport event for athletes of all ages and abilities held annually. Athletes from the 2008 Georgia State Games earn the right to compete against other athletes in the Southeast Sports Festival and match their skills and competitive desire in a regional arena.

   The State Games concept was developed in New York in 1978 with the Empire State Games. In 2007, more than 500,000 athletes competed in State Games statewide. State Games feature various sports of the Olympic and Pan American Games as well as sports that have regional popularity within each state.
