Gwinnett's Debutante Pearls learn the politics of tiaras
Lawrenceville, GA – It is no secret that for generations, parents have sent their high-school-age children to the Georgia Capitol to learn about the real world of politics. And this legacy of legislative learning continues as recently the twenty-five Debutante Pearls of the Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter's 2008 5th Biennial Debutante Cotillion
and Scholarship Ball learned the politics of tiaras. How? Each of
the darling debs not only visited the Capitol but also served as a "Page for a Day".
Serving as a Page is an exceptional experience. Typically, Pages assist Capitol staff, answer phones, deliver envelops and small packages, and man the flag -- just to name a few of their duties.
Nevertheless, in addition to "legislative learning," the Debutantes had the pleasure of meeting, greeting, and photo opportunities with Speaker of the House Glenn Richardson and Representative Carolyn Hugley.
"This was an experience of a lifetime for our Debutante Pearls," said Geri Baldwin Gonzalez, President, Upsilon Alpha Omega Graduate Chapter. "What better way to get youth engaged in government than by giving them a first hand experience of the inner workings of our State Capitol."
Sorority sisters Valerie Grigley and Monica Saunders serve as the Cotillion's Community Involvement/Community Service Committee Chairman and arranged the special day for the debutantes. Sorority sisters CaSandra Smith and Andria Freemont serve as Co-Chairman of the Debutante Cotillion and Scholarship Ball which is slated for Saturday, April 12 at 6:30 pm at the Mariott Marquis.
